The Madrid Protocol
The Madrid system of international registration of marks is governed by two treaties: the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks, which dates from 1891, and the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement, which entered into force in Turkey on December 1, 1995 and came into operation on April1, 1996. The system is administered by the International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Turkey has become member of the Madrid Protocol in January 1, 1999. Our firm has been filing Madrid Protocol applications on behalf of our Turkish clients since the introduction of the system. We are available to give advice based on our experience of all aspects of this international regime.
Trademark Protection in North Cyprus
Our trademark attorneys are allowed to act before the Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic authorities. Therefore, we will be pleased to attend to foreign applications in Northern Cyprus as well. It is necessary to file two separate applications for full protection in Cyprus, one for the Greek and for the Turkish parts of the island.
If the applicant is not resident in the Northern Cyprus, the power of attorney must be legalized with apostil. A single application can only include one International class of goods.
